Group activities that can help classroom/group discussions and projects about friendship, bullying, including and understanding others and people's differences.

Activity 1
Rainbow People
Make a large outline of a rainbow that you can display on the wall with the seven sections uncoloured.
Make a list of seven interests/qualities or abilities that different people may have eg enjoying or being good at sport, reading, making things, enjoying music, enjoying cooking, being very tidy, being a good helper.
Ask the children to pick one thing each from the list that they think they are good at or enjoy. Replace an interest with another if no one chooses it.
Tell the children that each quality will be a particular colour on the rainbow. For example: being good at sport will be red, being good at reading will be orange etc.
The children take turns to colour a section/part of a section of the rainbow that represents the quality or item on the list they have chosen.
The idea is that together the picture is coloured and becomes a complete rainbow. It is only because people are all different that this happens.

Activity 2
Spokes on a wheel
Make a large outline of a wheel that you can display on the wall. For now leave out the spokes.
Ask the children to take turns to come forward and draw in one wheel spoke each and write their name along their own spoke. Suggest where the lines might be drawn so that the spokes are evenly spread out.
Tell the children that everyone represents an important part of the wheel. Each part is different and each part is needed.
Talk together about how our different abilities, personalities and preferences help each other. Talk together about how we don’t all need to be the same.

Activity 3
Inspiring People Project
Make a list of people who have or who are doing something good or helpful or beneficial to others. Each person on the list must have some sort of disability or have overcome difficulties to achieve what they have achieved.
Each child or each small group of children find out some key facts about a different person. If you have local people (as well as or instead of famous people) on your list, then they may be willing to come into school/your group to talk to the children and answer questions.
Put all the information into a large book or folder to make your Inspiring People Project.

Activity 4
Ingredients!
Choose a simple recipe that has at least four different ingredients. Ask small groups of children to be in charge of different ingredients.
As you mix and make up your cake/biscuits etc the children take turns to add and mix the ingredients as they are needed.
Talk about how you need all the different ingredients and what each ingredient does.
Talk together about how we are all different as people and that together we make up the world.
Why not try making strawberry jam?

Activity 5
Imagine-a-day
Ask the children to imagine a special day when they could do all their favourite things. Write their days down eg: 10am go swimming; 12 noon eat at a favourite restaurant; 2pm go to the cinema etc
Now choose a character from one of the Strawberry Jam Books who has a disability eg Poppy in her wheelchair, Tom who has autism, Billie has a hearing problem.
How would the character you have chosen cope with their favourite day? What would they find difficult? What would they have to do differently and why? Would they have a completely different sort of favourite day? If the character was your best friend then how could you be thoughtful and helpful?
